I caught this tidbit on a mailing list today:

You spent a whole lot of time explaining endianness when a link to Wikipedia might have saved you a lot of time:

Just a sign that Wikipedia is at or near critical mass. I expect that we'll all start to see this much more regularly.

  • What happens when the wikipedia entry changes between the time when one person posts the link and another person references it? I don't think the entries change in a substantive way very often, but I suppose it could happen.
    • Yes, but that's the same risk that you run when you link to any web page, wiki or not.

      Wikipedia is a well-known target, and they tend to have a larger group of volunteers doing spam removal and fact checking than your average wiki. At worst, it's better than just googling for a term -- you never know what you'll find, or even if it's in the ballpark. At least with wikipedia, you've got a decent shot at getting something accurate enough to get an idea across, which is much better than spending time writ
