On September 18 and 19, 2008, the Italian Perl Workshop 2008 took place at the Computer Science Department of the University of Pisa. It was a huge success; here are some numbers: 2 days of conference, 2 parallel tracks, more than 30 talks, 120 attendees, 20 sponsors, 3 patrons (Comune di Pisa, YAPC::Europe Foundation, Perl Foundation), and many international guests, including: Tim Bunce, Rafaël Garcia-Suarez, Marcus Ramberg and Matt S Trout.

On behalf of the Parrot team, I'm proud to announce Parrot 0.7.1 "Manu Aloha." Parrot is a virtual machine aimed at running all dynamic languages.

Parrot 0.7.1 is available via CPAN (soon), or follow the download instructions. For those who would like to develop on Parrot, or help develop Parrot itself, we recommend using Subversion on our source code repository to get the latest and best Parrot code.

As promised a couple of weeks ago, I've sent a census email to all registered leaders of Perl Mongers groups. If you are the leader of a group and you haven't received the mail, then please contact me at census[at]pm.org.

Results should follow in a few weeks (dependent on how soon the group leaders respond).

We're organising another Perl Mongers census this year. The last one was in 2005 so it's about time. In the next few weeks all Perl Mongers group leaders will receive an email asking them to fill in a census return for their group.

The email will be sent to the group leaders using the email address we have in the PM group directory. And that's why I'm giving this advance notice. If you're in a Perl Monger group then please check that the contact details we have for your group are corrected. If anything needs to be amended then please ask your group leader to get in touch with us to fix it.

I'm going to be presenting the Perl Teach-In in Birmingham on Monday 31st March as part of UKUUG's Spring 2008 Conference. The talk will be (lightly) updated from the one I gave at the BBC last summer.

This tutorial won't be free. As I understand it, the class will open to people who are registered at the conference, but I don't currently know how much that will cost or whether you'll be able to buy a ticket for just the tutorial day. I'm sure more information will appear on their web site soon.

I should start looking in to running the Teach-In in London again.

  New London.pm Leader 2007-12-03 10:57 davorg

One momentous event at the London Perl Workshop (or, more accurately, in the pub afterwards) was the announcement of a new London.pm leader.

Our previous leader, Simon Wistow, is off to make his fortune in the colonies so he has handed over the ceremonial stuffed camel to Greg McCarroll. Greg, of course, needs no introduction as he has been deeply involved with London.pm and YAPC::Europe for a long time.

So many congratulations and good luck to Greg. And many thanks to Simon for the excellent work he's put in as our leader over the last few years.

jmcada writes "WindyCity.pm and Chicago.pm are excited to announce the 2007 Chicago Perl Hackathon. This three-day event will be held at Hosteling International Chicago, which is located in downtown Chicago at the corner of Congress and Wabash. The hackathon runs from December 14th through December 16th. If you want to stay in the hostel, a three-night package is only $120 US... less than a single night in most downtown hotels.

At the moment there is no topic for the hackathon, it is an open hack session. However, there will be representatives from quite a few Perl projects present if you are short on ideas. One of the larger projects represented will be the Catalyst framework.

Feel free to contact Jonathan Rockway, Josh McAdams, or brian d foy for more information."

Andy Lester writes "The Perl Foundation is pleased to announce the election of Alberto Simões to the position of Grants Committee Chair. Alberto was elected by the Grants Committee members from a pool of four strong candidates.

Alberto is president of the Portuguese Association for Perl Programmers, the leader of Braga.pm and the co-chair of YAPC::EU 2005 in Braga, Portugal. Alberto is a Ph.D. student in Machine Translation (Natural Language Processing) at the University of Minho, in Braga.

Curtis "Ovid" Poe has held the position of Grants Committee Chair since autumn of 2005. The Perl Foundation would like to give Curtis our deepest thanks for an excellent tenure as Chair of the Grants Committee and for all his help in preparing the search and election of his successor. Curtis has also pledged his support to help Alberto get up to speed as the new Grants Committee Chair over the next few weeks."
