While the venue of YAPC::EU::2009 has not been announced yet, the future organizers will be using Twitter, Jaiku, and Pownce accounts, in order to help improve the communication with the attendees.

With the next venue being announced at this year's YAPC::EU in Copenhagen (on August 13th), maybe next year organizers will also make the announcement with these accounts in real time (for those not attending the conference).

We got over 20 nominations (I'd call that a success).

I am now compiling all the emails and information and afterwards the discussion and the voting will start.

It's not going to be an easy task, I can tell you that... There's lot of good stuff in those emails :-)

White Camel nominations are now open 2008-05-17 12:43 cog

Every year, at OSCON, the White Camels are presented.

If you look at the previous winners, you'll notice that these are mostly unsung heroes, like previous awardee Eric Cholet, the human moderator of so many Perl mailing lists, or Jay Hannah, one of the people running pm.org (if you ever created/maintained a pm group, chances are that Jay walked you through the process).

Some of these people may be well known, like Allison Randal or Randal Schwartz, while others may be complete strangers to at least part of the globe, like Josh McAdams or Jay. Some of them may be extreme Perl hackers who created the original JAPH, but they actually received this award as a recognition for their community contributions to Perl.

That's not to say a great hacker can't receive the award, but you don't have to be one in order to be eligible.

That being said, the nomination process for the 2008 White Camels is now open.

If you think there's someone who deserves a White Camel, this is the time for you to send in your nominations. Send them to jose@pm.org, if possible with a subject along the lines of "White Camel Nomination :: $name". Make sure you properly identify the nominee and tell us why you think that's a worthy nomination.

Don't go thinking "nah, somebody else will do it" because: a) everybody else may be thinking the same, and b) you may state your case differently than the next person.

We'll be receiving nominations until June 11, 2008, by midnight, but don't wait up or you'll forget. Do it now!

One Thousand Perl Mongers 2008-04-29 18:30 cog

Back in November we created the LinkedIn Perl Mongers group.

Well, we just passed one thousand monks.

And who is The 1000th Monk, you ask? (great title, uh?)

Why, none other than Eric Wilhelm.

Congrats, Eric :-)

And, of course, this also means that one of the next few monks joining the group will become the 1024th monk on it... (another interesting title)

It's true! It's going to happen!

June 6th and 7th (a Friday and a Saturday), in Braga, Portugal.

brian d foy is going to be there and he will also be lecturing two days of Intermediate Perl Programming on the 4th and on the 5th (and we could also tell you which days of the week those are, but instead we'll just let you guess). Other national and foreign speakers are also expected (there's already some movement on DOPPLR).

What did you say? A website? Of course we have a website, don't be ridiculous... Now, where did we put it? Ah, here it is!

You may want to subscribe our feed, since that's the place where the CFP and other announcements are supposed to show up.

Also, spread the word!

See you in Braga ;-)

2008 looks promising, and Lisbon.pm will be starting the year with a tech meeting.

Tomorrow, Thursday (January the 3rd), starting around 20:00.

The talks:

  • "Perl6 em Perl6" (Perl6 in Perl6), by Flávio Glock
  • "It'll be over in a Jifty", by Jesse Vincent

Attendance is kind of free, because the tech meeting will be held in a restaurant, and food isn't free O:-)

If you want to be with us tomorrow, please join our mailing list (details on our website), confirm your presence until tomorrow noonish and ask for more information on how to get to the restaurant there.

Sorry for the last minute notice and for the apparent lack of organization, but we were having trouble finding a place to meet :-)
