  Orlando Perl Mongers 2008-05-15 06:01

So tonight I got to speak to the Orlando Perl Mongers’ group on Moose. The group for only having two meetings was surprisingly well organized and seemed to have some very good people involved with it. They are however trying to expand (like any good group), and I thought perhaps people in the echo chamber would be able to come out of the woodwork and support the Orlando group. We have a talk on board for next month, but are looking for speakers for the month(s) after.

Birmingham.pm World Tour 2008 - Birmingham LUG - 15th May 2008

The next date on the Birmingham Perl Mongers World Tour gets a bit more local, with the crew visiting our friends at Birmingham LUG. Barbie and JJ will be along to present a couple of talks that seem to have gone down very well with previous tour attendees. Talk schedule looks as follows:

Perl Mongers BOF in Copenhagen 2008-05-10 05:43

Posted by brian_d_foy on 2008.05.10 5:43

YAPC::Europe 2008 in Copenhagen is fast approaching, and the deadline for proposals for next year's conference is not too far away (June 30th), but I've been thinking of events even further in the future. With the Perl Monger census that Dave Cross is organising, I'm hoping it might identify some of the groups that could potentially host the event, given that their membership would be big enough to help out. I then hope to get to know some of the leaders and members that are attending YAPC::Europe themselves, and see if I can encourage a few to at least think about hosting a YAPC::Europe. Seeing as we've now had 3 in the UK, there's no reason why we can't hold it in Germany, France or Portugal again. So I won't just be trying to persuade those in countries who have never hosted before ;)

brian_d_foy writes "I'm spending May in Lille, France, so on May 13, I'm going to visit Bruxelles.pm just up the road. It's a quick train trip. I'll be at the Greenwich Café around 18:00 if anyone wants to meet earlier. I have to catch the last train back to Lille at 21:00, so don't come late!

I thought about visiting London.pm tonight, which is also not that far by train. Eurostar wants $800 per person for the trip, so I guess that is right out. Even booking two weeks in advance they want a lot more than I'm willing to pay to have a few drinks with one of the biggest Perl Mongers groups. So, sorry London :(."

  2008Q2 TPF Grant Proposals 2008-05-02 02:12

Posted by brian_d_foy on 2008.05.02 2:12
On The Perl Foundation weblog are a set of posts with proposals received by the Grants Committee during the second call for grant proposals for 2008. Although not usual, the rules of the TPF Grants Committee are changing and we hope to make this a rule. Proposals are accepted during one month and after that period, they are posted for public discussion. This is important to make the Grants Committee more aware of the community interest on the project, and to help opening the grants attribution process.

During the month of April we received the following grant proposals:
Please take some time on reading the proposals carefully and give some feedback on the relevance of the proposals.

Our latest update to Learning Perl is now available for pre-order on O'Reilly and Amazon. It should be here before OSCON 2008, but I don't know how soon before OSCON that is.

In the new edition, we've updated the text for Perl 5.10. The 5.10 features we cover are:

  • using say()
  • defined-or operator
  • named captures in regular expressions
  • smart matching
  • stacked file test operators
  • state variables
  • given-when

Along with that, we've updated the text for the latest Perl history and happenings, and made modules a more important part of the book.

One Thousand Perl Mongers 2008-04-30 02:17

Posted by brian_d_foy on 2008.04.30 2:17
Back in November we created the LinkedIn Perl Mongers group.

Well, we just passed one thousand monks.

And who is The 1000th Monk, you ask? (great title, uh?)

Why, none other than Eric Wilhelm.

Congrats, Eric :-)

And, of course, this also means that one of the next few monks joining the group will become the 1024th monk on it... (another interesting title)
