Leader of Birmingham.pm [pm.org], CPAN author and father of 2. Spare time involves lots of Perl (see links below) and arranging meetings for Birmingham.pm (if you would like to visit us and/or give a talk, please let us know). I co-organised YAPC::Europe in 2006 and now help to support organisers with documentation and templates, and I keep an eye on CPAN Testing helping to promote it as much as I can.

If you really want to find out more, buy me a Guinness. Just don't ask the obvious ... Grep has been for 6 years and is still no closer ;)

After a successful QA Hackathon in Oslo earlier this year, Birmingham.pm are delighted to be able to announce that a second QA Hackathon will take place in Birmingham, UK. Dates have yet to be confirmed, but we expect the event to take place in March/April 2009. More details will forthcoming soon, so please check the new website — qa-hackathon.org — and the usual news outlets, and we will make further announcements in due course.

We are happy to talk to anyone wishing to sponsor the event, and if you or your company would like to contact the organisers, please do so at organisers@qa-hackathon.org.

A new CPAN Testers Domain 2008-07-07 07:17 barbie

Submitted by barbie on 2008.07.07 7:17
I'm not quite sure why no-one has ever thought of it before, but the other week I had the strange urge to see what website a particular domain resolved to. It didn't resolve to anything and I was quite surprised to find it available and not being used for other dubious purposes, so I set about registering the domain. It seemed an obvious domain to use for the collection of CPAN Testers websites, so having sent out a few emails last week, I have set up DNS entries for the existing websites, just to make life a little easier for everyone to remember them all. The original domains are not changing, so you can still use those, but if you ever find yourself talking to someone about CPAN Testers and finding it difficult to remember the right URL, the new sub-domains might make it a little easier to remember them.

So, with limited fanfare and bunting, I give you:

In addition you can also send mail to discuss@cpantesters.org, which will be routed through to cpan-testers-discuss@perl.org. All other mail to that domain will be routed through to my personal address, and will be subject to my very aggressive mail filters ;) If there are other mail redirections worth adding, please let me know.

Next year, the UKUUG Spring Conference (aka Large Installation Systems Administration (LISA) Conference) will be returning to Birmingham. Birmingham Perl Mongers will be lending their support and experience to the organisers, together with the Python West Midlands user group and several of the midlands Linux User Groups. The conference will focus on dynamic languages, with several topics up for discussion.

If you wish to submit a paper, the Call for Papers is out with a submission deadline of 16th November 2007. Send a title, summary and decription to spring2008@ukuug.org, and you'll be contacted by 30th November 2007 as to whether your talk is accepted or not.

The conference will be followed by the 2-day E-Mail Systems Conference 2008, with the possibility of something Perl specific happening the weekend before, if you wanted to plan a longer stay in Birmingham. Visit the UKUUG Spring 2008 Conference website for more details on the conference itself and I will announce more as it becomes available.

I personally would be delighted to see a notable number of Perl talks and tutorials, so if you're in the UK around the end of March and would be willing to head to Birmingham for the week, please consider submitting a talk. Hope to see you there.

The YAPC::Europe Foundation is pleased to announce that Copenhagen, Denmark has been chosen as the site for YAPC::Europe 2008, the ninth European YAPC.

Copenhagen faced stiff competition from Braga, Portugal, which hosted a memorable YAPC::Europe in 2005. This year also marked the first submission from a group unaffiliated with Perlmongers: the Informatics department of Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, United Kingdom. We hope that both these groups will give us the opportunity to consider their proposals again in the future.

We are confident that Copenhagen.pm's experienced team — which was responsible for several Nordic Perl Workshops — will put together a wonderful conference.

We hope to see you in Copenhagen next summer!

New CPAN Testers Discuss mailing list[->] 2007-08-15 06:42 barbie

Submitted by barbie on 2007.08.15 6:42
Over the years there have been several suggestions to create a mailing list to discuss the developments of the CPAN Testing tools. When it was first created, the original CPAN Testers mailing list didn't get too much traffic and it was fairly easy to follow a discussion. However, with thousands of reports now being produced daily, any discussion gets lost in the deluge without heavy filtering in place, and even there are false positives. Following a recent request, the perl.org crew have kindly set us up with a new mailing list for anyone who is interested in the toolsets, process and any such related discussions.

Please welcome the all new CPAN Testers Discuss mailing list. Sign up by sending an empty mail to cpan-testers-discuss @ perl.org. Archives are available on the web, with more info available on the CPAN Testers Wiki.

Thanks to Robert and Ask for setting this up.

Final Call for Venue for YAPC::Europe::2008[->] 2007-06-21 13:28 YAPC Europe Venue Committee

Submitted by barbie on 2007.06.21 13:28
As YAPC::Europe::2007 in Vienna is drawing closer, the YAPC::Europe Venue Committee are looking forward to reviewing all the proposals from those wishing to host the 2008 conference. If you haven't already done so, please send a brief statement of intent to venue@yapceurope.org. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2007, after which the committee will begin the review process.

For more information about the requirements for hosting a conference, you may want to refer to the YAPC organisers documentation (administered by TPF) or look at the examples of previous European conferences.

Please direct any questions to venue@yapceurope.org, and a member of the committee will endeavour to respond as soon as possible. The public announcement of the location for the 2008 conference will be announced during the 2007 conference in Vienna.
