Niederrhein.pm had it's May - meeting yesterday in Websters Brauhaus in Duisburg, the place where our first meeting was.
We were only 4, but with the help of the others I got Perl running on the Zaurus - all it took was unsetting LANG in .bashrc, so Perl doesn't get conflicting information about the locale.
Our next meeting will be on 2002-06-20 in Duesseldorf.

niederrhein.pm not meeting today
posponed the meeting that was originally scheduled to take place today.
It'll be next week on Thursday, 25th April.
The meeting was posponed because a lot of members couldn't come today, but can come next week.
We will meet in Dusseldorf on a boat on the Rhine.
It is likely that we spent parts of our time talking about the Zaurus.

VI on Zaurus works
Now I got VI working on my Zaurus. Silly me got the commands wrong - of course it doesn't work with the wrong command.
It works with the keyboard as well as with handwriting recognition or virtual keyboard or pickboard.

Perl on Zaurus
Hey it works. I actually get a reaction from Perl on the Zaurus. It warns me about something to do with localization, but in principle it works.
So I think some tweaking is needed, as well as getting vi to save something (it is not very amusing to write something and then not being able to save it). In the mean time I still can write some perl on my desktop box, and sync it.
Friday April 12, 2002
Ah, a long time I waited for this day - I got my Zaurus. Got back from the shop, unpacked it.
Switched it on - Linux booting - what a sight on a pda
:). Everything pre-configured for standard pda use.
Now I need to install some linux tools (vi and Perl mainly) to be happy.
Yes, Perl I wrote. I've seen it over at sourceforge
. So I will of course try that soon.

work after holiday
Coming back from a holiday can be quite gruesome:
You find a lot of work no one wanted to do in your absence and stuff no one could do in your absence (thats working for a small business). So now after 3 rather longish days of work, I'm tired - really tired. And working on php-database stuff doesn't really help that. Custom-made Perl for something interesting is out of sight rigt now. I just have to produce php - lots of it. *sigh*
Back from Southern France
I spent a pleasant time in the Provence and returned on Saturday. After a lot of work at home and in the office, today I finally got the time to pick up my journal again.
I've become a trial member of the HTML Writers Guild
(both, because they are together now). I still haven't decided if I'll get a full membership though.
Monday March 11, 2002
This is a birthday free week - thank god for that.
In our family a lot of birthdays come within a few days in march - this year celebrations began on wednesday with one birthday coming even before that, but getting celebrated on saturday together with the one from friday. And on saturday a friend also celebrated his birthday, so we went to two parties. Sunday was the last celebration.
Next family birthday will be by the end of April. Which gives me a little time to lose the weight of this weeks orgies.

not using Perl :(
This is a miserable day. My identity card will expire shortly, so I wanted to apply for a new one. Of course stupid me didn't think they would need a birth certificate with my application. But they did.
So I had to visit my parents, to get the birth certificate and go back. Nice.
But I finally could apply for the identity card and the new European driving license.
And then I struggled a litte with php - I'm not a brilliant perler but some idioms are just common use for me, and suddenly everything works different, because it's not Perl I'm using right now.
