Now in NY

Kyla and I arrived here late last night. We unwound a bit, then went to bed. After not seeing Suzy (the wife) for a month, we.. well, just cue the porn music!

Today I'm just hanging out. Got the apartment networked, and my dad is over playing with Kyla. And, I'm weeding through emails. Tomorrow I get to go see the progress made on the house! Can't wait. This apartment is nice enough, but I really want to be in my house!

Updates will come as I have them. One thing that is still the same.. WILL HACK PERL FOR MONEY.. INQUIRE WITHIN!! I'm still looking for any contract of telecommute work :-)

Time is short(er)

Well, as my friends and cohorts are gathering for OSCon, I'm here doing final preps for the packers to come tomorrow. I also just had a final lunch with my friend and Japanese tutor Yukiko. I'll miss her, she's really very nice. She goes back to Japan next month herself.

So, I guess today I will make sure all is set for tomorrow (not like I'd know it was "set" or not), go for a swim, and play some iConquer.

This will also be my last real day online. Tomorrow night through Thurday morning I'll be staying with my mom. Since I have no dialup, I'll effectively be offline until next Sunday when I can set up my network in the apartment.

So, farewell (until next week).

Wedding Anniversary

Today is my 7th wedding anniversary. Sort of sucks since Suzy is up in NY already and I'm not able to celebrate. It also marks the 10th year we have been together. We were married on the 3 year anniversary of our first date. Romantic? Maybe. Lazy? Yes. Having to only remember one day for two occassions is pretty good :)

Almost NY Time

In less than 2 weeks now I will be driving up to NY and leaving Fl behind! I can't wait. I'll probably start driving on July 10. Then, I'll be in Clifton Park until my house is done being built in Wilton (outside Saratoga Springs). I'm soooo excited.

On the other hand, I'm unemployed. So I will be shamelessly saying "I AM AVAILABLE FOR PERL PROJECTS!" :-)

Back to reality

So, YAPC::NA is over and went very well. Not sure when the next time I will organize a conference will be.

But, I'm not unemployed and looking for contract/telecommute work!!

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? :-)

YAPC Schedule

Yay! I finished the schedule for YAPC::NA. Now I need to notify the speakers (who I didn't already tell) and let the cat out of the bag! I'm sure it will change a little from how it is now, but seems pretty solid. Looks to be a good conference.. everyone should come!

YAPC Hotel

Thanks to a contact of a fellow, it looks like the DoubleTree Guest Suites will be giving YAPC goers a special rate. It will be $59 for a suite (bedroom, living room). Rooms can have double beds, and the living room will have a sleeper-sofa. So, about $20 per-person (plus tax) to have 3 stay in a room. Not bad. Plus, they provide breakfast (and so will YAPC), and have a Happy Hour from 5:30-7pm. AND, they will provide a shuttle service to FAU and places within 5 miles of the hotel (like the beach). AND! They have wireless access at the hotel. So, you can sit at the pool and hack. There is a charge for the wireless ($10, I think), but it could possibly be thrown in for free. DoubleTree also works with the Hilton HHoners program. So, seems like a pretty good deal. I'll get some info on the YAPC::America site within the next few days. I want to make sure they have "Perl Conference" or something in their system for when people call to book.

Oh, and they give you some yummy cookies! This is a great alternative to the dorms, especially if you bring family.

YAPC Abstracts

So, the deadline for abstracts has passed. I decided it would be good to start with the schedule making by listing all the talks by length. This sort of gives me a 'master list'. Anyways, there are a lot of proposed talks, and many of them look very interesting. Many 'big' names from the community, and a few people I have never heard of (which is good!). I hope I am not too busy during the con to actually enjoy some of these!

I hope to have a "beta" schedule soon. But, if anyone was waiting for a schedule before registering... no need. The schedule should be pretty appealing.

Also have dorm info coming up. Going to try to get the payment for dorms on the reg page (for when you register, and to be able to go back later and reserve a room).

Aside from this ulcer I am getting from being nervous about the whole thing, I'm pretty excited.

YAPC::NA progress

So far, the hardest thing about organizing YAPC::NA::Boca is when people you need to respond to things don't. If you don't know the status of step B, you can't go to step C. And, there are so many emails you can send asking "SO??"

But, I think things are going well. Got a nice amount of proposals (still accepting until March 15!) from Randal, Uri, Damian and other good folks. MJD should be doing lightning talks, Larry said he is coming.. so all is good there.

All the rooms should be set, so that is good. Registration is up, so that is good (not sure how many people have registered, though). And, I have a good group of guys from the South Florida Perl Mongers helping me out (thanks Jeff!)

I'm waiting to hear if we are all set with the dorms, which the catering will follow. I also have a contact at Embassy Suites which may be able to work something out for rates (thanks Prakash!).

It should be a good con. I hope people come :)
