No fun at all

[ #436 ]

The last 2 days, i've been doing some Java programming. I have a hard time understanding how some programmers can stand it. For example, a simple thing as checking if a numeric variable is >0 or if a bitwise AND is >0 (true) is a mess in Java and really pollutes the code.

I found out that the if statement expects a boolean so i have to do: if(variable != 0) { }. I actually tried doing a typecast from an int to a boolean. But that's not allowed either.

This is not sane!

I wonder if C# has the same stupidity...

BEER!!!!

[ #419 ]

Friday evening, over at a friends place drinking Heineken (which IMHO is a damn good beer).

Well, it's finally weekend and I have pretty much free time this time to work on the bindings and my speech for Yapc::EU. I've been assigned the small auditorium which is good, since i'm sure i'll get nervous.

Not so very good news is that my short term memory is fading, need to buy me an übergeek dictaphone to be able to remember important stuff.

And now to the status of JavaScript.pm:

      - I realised today that the design of class bindings is wrong, so i will redesign it this weekend.
      - I've been tracking down some memory leaks and trying to figure out REFCNTs. Devel::Peek is your friend.
      - I've added a set_error_handler method to JavaScript::Context which lets you either set a subrutine as callback when an error occures or (in near feature) give it a scalar to update when an error occures.
      - I've began the documentation process so i can release it to CPAN.
      - A site is on the way on http://labs.contiller.se/JavaScript/. There is not much to see there yet. /claes

Next to hell....

Claes rule #2: Never trust preinstalled linux boxen...

One of our webservers, a (Distribution not mentioned) powered (Manufacturer not mentioned) machine ran out of usr diskspace this morning causing things to go wild.

When i checked the disk space usage, i found out that there was 1 GB for root, 20 MB for boot, 500 MB for tmp, 2 GB for usr, 900 MB for var and 3.5 GB (!!!) for home... And as an added bonus, home had quota enabled. Is this a webserver or a fileserver???

Besides the strange partition of the disk, this machine was shipped with a broken gcc that couldn't compile htdig, a swedish locale that could handle swedish characters and other strange features that makes it evil...

Well, to the good news:

I've done some more work on the JS bindings and i'm now working on fixing memory leaks. I should also take some time maybe this evening and port it to Win32. Porting it shouldn't be too hard since SpiderMonkey already runs on Win32. /claes

Another day in paradise...

[ #397 ]

After a week of vacation with great weather i'm now back at work. Today there is rain.

During my vacation, i spent some time working on the JavaScript bindings for Perl. Hopfully, i can release it to CPAN this week.

Todo:
  - Fix memory cleanups.
  - Write lots and lots of tests.
  - Add better error handling and support for JS try/catch/finally.
  - Fix an Inline::JavaScript.
  - Write documentation.
  - Put up a homepage about it.
  - Write some kind of wrapper base package that others can subclass to simply import packages into the JS namespace. /claes
