brian_d_foy writes "It's time to nominate recipients for the White Camel award, which recognizes non-technical achievement in Perl. Coding is easy, but the people who make the hard slog to support the community and the continued usefulness of Perl are rare and valuable, just like white camels.

I invented the White Camel Award in 1999 as a part of Perl Mongers, and it's now handled by The Perl Foundation. To submit a name (and the reason for the award), send email to whitecamel-suggestions@perl.org . The deadline is May 31, and TPF will present the awards at OSCON."

yumpy writes "Tim Maher will be giving a talk called Harnessing the Power of Perl's One-Liners on April 28 and 29 at the LinuxFest Northwest conference in Bellingham WA (near Vancouver CA), and also selling autographed copies of his Minimal Perl book in the exhibit hall. The other Perl related talk is Allison Randal's Parrot: a VM for Dynamic Languages. LinuxFest NW is always a fun event with lots of interesting talks, people, and products—and it's free to boot—so those who can are encouraged to attend."

YAPC::Asia 2007 (4/4-5 in Tokyo, Japan) was again a huge success: lots of attendees (approx. 450) and interesting talks. Even if you didn't make it, you can enjoy the conference online now that Video and Audio recordings are available.

All video files are now uploaded on Google Video so you can browse all the talks with Flash player or download as DivX or MP4 movie file. They are also integrated in YAPC::Asia 2007 Sessions detail pages using Google Video embed Flash player.

For people going mobile, Podcast feed (mp3 audio) and Videocast feed (iPod/PSP ready mp4 video) files are both available.

A hackathon is a gathering of free and open source software developers reflecting the joy of collective hacking. Building on the tradition of previous Perl hackathons in Toronto, Chicago and elsewhere, Hackathon Toronto will encourage people to come together for face-to-face work on Perl 5, Perl 6, CPAN modules, Parrot, Pugs and ... you name it!

jfluhmann writes "Only one week left to submit your talk proposal (must be logged in) for YAPC::NA 2007! Deadline is midnight (CST) on April 9th. Please login or create an account on the ACT-hosted YAPC::NA site and submit your proposal before it's too late. If you'd like to give a talk but are not quite sure what to present, look at the wiki for talk suggestions. Or if you don't plan on giving a talk, but would like to suggest one, then add it to the list of suggestions. Again, last year attendees requested talks be tagged with suggested experience level of attendee (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Please include this in the comments section of your talk if appropriate. See the official CFP posting."

We're pleased to announce that we've selected Phil Crow as the recipient of the second Perl 6 microgrant. Phil is the hacker behind the Java::Swing module which allows Perl programmers to put a Java Swing GUI on their application without writing any Java and he'll be using this knowledge to convert Java declarations to Perl 6. You can find details of the project he's planning in the text of his grant application:

barbie writes "With preparations for YAPC::Europe::2007 well underway in Vienna, it is time for the YAPC::Europe Venue Committee to consider suitable hosts for the 2008 conference. Any dedicated group interested in hosting YAPC::Europe::2008 should send a brief statement of intent to venue@yapceurope.org. A full and complete application should then be sent to the same address prior to the deadline for applications, which is June 30, 2007.

For more information about the requirements for hosting a conference, you may want to refer to the YAPC organisers documentation (administered by TPF) or look at the examples of previous European conferences.

Please direct any questions to venue@yapceurope.org, and a member of the committee will endeavour to respond as soon as possible. The public announcement of the location for the 2008 conference will be announced during the 2007 conference in Vienna."

The conference dates are June 25th through 27th at the University of Houston's central campus in Houston, Texas. The conference will feature speakers from throughout the Perl community, including keynotes from Larry Wall (the creator of Perl), Damian Conway, and The Perl Foundation. Following Chicago.pm's lead, low-cost post-conference training classes provided by noteable Perl trainers will again be available.

Developed to run enterprise web environments, WebGUI is easy to use, extremely powerful, and easily customized. This is an excellent opportunity for Perl programmers to learn about developing for WebGUI from one of the creators of the cms himself.
