  • You're quite correct that I have the ability to set things at my own pace, but like many sparkly things, conditions apply, and actual results may vary.

Training is very much a variable and seasonal business. Sometimes we're flooded with bookings (like recently), and sometimes there's no work for months (like this upcoming June/July). Ideally, one moves work from the busy periods to the quiet periods, but that's not always possible. Sometimes businesses have itinerant staff, and this is the only week they're all in the office. Sometimes there's a big project due, and the training needs happen before (or after) it ships. Sometimes the course was scheduled at a quiet time, but lots of other things have now built up around it.

However even when things are quiet, I still find myself with similar social barriers. Most of my friends now have real jobs, children, or both. I can work around this to see each of them a little, but it's hard to see any of them a lot. That's what I find myself missing right now.

The obvious solution to this is to find friends who don't have jobs, don't have kids, and who aren't complete losers. While I have a few of these already, most people falling into this category are university students. Going back to Uni is an attractive option, despite the fact that I'd feel like I was in an Avenue Q [stlyrics.com] song. ;)
