I don't have a nano, but I've played with them a few times and owned other models. Your technical difficulties (low battery life, hard to read screen, cold boots, poor sound) seem quite unusual and probably indicate a defect. I'd take it back ASAP while it's still under warranty. I've heard (and had) a lot of complaints about ipods, but never those.
To anyone who would reply with a comment: Please do not reply and disagree with a premise without addressing the conclusions.
I don't disagree. The ipod is largely based on branding and integration with their software and store. I think the real problem is that manufacturing computer hardware alone is becoming more and more a commidity operation. The people who make money do so by locking in users so they don't need to innovate. Everyone else can't afford to any more.
