  • One thing I learned working at the airline: one of the dispatchers once explained how weather in a seemingly-unrelated city affects your flight. One of the parts of a flight plan is the "where are we gonna land if something goes wrong" plan.

    It's been too many years (ten in a few weeks) but I think there is a limit on the number of planes that can list a given airport as an alternate, so if Chicago wx is bad flights that would otherwise pick it bump to, say, MCI, and then flights that get crowded out pick DFW, or whatever, so there's a ripple effect.

    I believe the end of that conversation was me walking away wondering how the heck anybody got anywhere. And we were freight dogs, flying the relatively uncrowded nighttime skies...
