    I'm usin' Perl in conjunction with AWK [bell-labs.com]. It really helps me a lot in my work which is modelling earthquakes.I usually process large chunks of data (eg. Digital Elevation Models like SRTM [nasa.gov]).

    With Perl+AWK classifying data sets, changing their properties and look, marging different data types are very easy and it is very quick.

    Maybe u don't recognize'em yet but there are a lot of earth scientists using Perl in their work, believe me ...
