  • For the past year, I've been playing bass with a heavy rock band. Prior to that, it had been about 15 years since I'd seriously picked up the instrument.

    Lots of blisters. Making new callouses hurts - and there's no shortcut for it.

    Probably the most frustrating part was the beginning... knowing that I was capable of much more than I was doing, but not having the strength / stamina / dexterity / muscle memory to pull off those old licks.

    My suggestion would be to break out the music that you used to love to play to get your chops back in shape, then worry about jamming with others afterwards.

    One final note: After owning a fretless four string for 20+ years, and playing on a five string for the last year, I ordered a very reasonably-priced six string from Musician's Friend just this evening. Wish me luck in getting used to it...
