sawfish. It's mostly written in lisp, and the
lisp statements.
There's even a program 'sawfish-client' which connects to your currently-running
sawfish wm and gives you an interactive REPL (read-eval-print loop) so you can
develop your customizations.
All of this allows you to design your own keyboard-or-mouse-based window
placement, switching, etc.. One of my friends added bindings for
alt-ctrl-[digit] to play random sound clips.
As for ease of installation -- ditch Red Hat and go with Debian, FreeBSD, or
NetBSD. They have the added advantage of not being controlled by some company.
