Kind of a truism, actually:
If you drink enough Koolaid you get bloated views of your own importance.
Removing contact with the rest of the world seems to imply that your importance within your limited social hierarchy increases, and your limited social hierarchy's importance increases to global proportions.
I'm not sure if the converse condition -- reducing the importance of one's social hierarchy or one's own place within it -- is less common or just less frequently obvious. It's hard to notice someone who thinks they're unimportant -- they hide, unintentionally.
