Minds on the matter together is the secret, I think.
That's why communication of results is important.
I like seeing ongoing activity by the students themseleves too.
That reassured me that their nose was to the grindstone.

Eric posted a fairly brief report at http://use.perl.org/article.pl?sid=08/08/29/1224242 [perl.org]. It doesn't really tell a long story of how the participation in the SOC unfolded. I think that if you're in the center of it all, it's quite difficult to do that.
