    In fact, some of Robinson's descriptions make the reader wonder if he hasn't already been there.
    That's because he almost was there. I believe that Kim Stanley Robinson visited Antartica briefly while doing research for the book. He liked it so much, he wrote another book, Antartica. The climate here around the poles (or at least the south pole) is most like what's found on Mars. So, in effect, he did got as close to mars as possible without leaving orbit.


  • Looks like the end of this round of the tour was just in time. That means you can read Green Mars and Blue Mars (and perhaps The Martians too) before you resume your interrupted tour.

    My son is currently doing a book report on Ender's Game, so my wife just finished reading it. She's gone straight on the next book (i.e. she's started reading both Speaker For The Dead and Ender's Shadow to decide which is next. The jury is still out.
