  after looking through the discussion, I would think that approaching some of the major mirrors would be a better solution than 'phone home'.
  Even a handful of mirrors would be able to provide some kind of a picture if they collected and shared statistics.
  opt-in and manual phoning home wouldn't really work and opt-out isn't an acceptable solution.
