As a programmer, you may appreciate the mozex extension [mozdev.org] for Firefox. It allows you to edit the textarea box in an external editor of your choice.

For some reason with the most recent Firefox I can't see the preferences anymore, but can still edit them easily by opening "about:config" and filtering for "mozex".
