  • The Economist had an article a few months ago, March I think, about how qat is sucking Yemen dry. Basically it is the only crop being produced and it needs a lot of water.

    Qat is also becoming a major problem in that *everyone* seems to be using it. Lots of pushers and users.

    The article was predicting some nasty wars over water in a few years because of the water shortage as well as potentail qat shortage.
