  • I don't know whether the issue is that it's hard to write good scripts....

    The original series predated me by several years, so I don't know how much my rule of thumb applies there. However, every series from TNG on has proven that the Star Trek writers are completely incapable of subtlety when writing a Social Issue of the Week episode. Also, time travel.

    Think of them as the PHP-Gtk of television. I find that sets my expectations appropriately and usually end up reading a book instead.

  • I would think a certain amount of formula would be necessary to make it feel at least somewhat like Star Trek. Not that I'm knocking Star Trek, but formulas are one of its most enduring features.
