  • get a roof shovel (Score:3, Informative)

I've got a roof shovel for this job - the shovel head is mounted at 90 degrees to the pole, pointing backwards (where a standard shovel is angled slightly off 180 degrees, pointing forwards). It comes with snap-in extension handles that give you a reach of about 5 meters. You stand on the ground and lift the shovel onto the roof, and then pull it towards yourself - the backwards head collects snow and drags it to the edge of the roof.
    • Yeppers, a roof shovel on the to-buy list.

Unfortunately, my house is a full two story, rendering such roof shovels substantially less useful. If I can manage to find a hardware store that still has them in stock, I'll buy one to use from the roof peak to *push* the snow down and off.
