Actually, chances are, one or the other will not be in the playoffs. That's part of what makes this series so important. The Chicago White Sox are in first place in the Wild Card chase, with records better than both the Sox and Yankees. And the Twins are in second, ahead of the Sox.

With the expanded league and the expanded playoff system the Yankees have reached the playoffs every year [mlb.com] since the 94 strike season. In that time, they have been to the World Series six times, winning four of them.
I'd say, with the current system, their obscene payroll (over 50% larger than the #2 payroll) is a guaranteed playoff spot, with a 50/50 chance of a World Series win. DUMB.

It's no guarantee. The Sox have a decent chance to knock them off this year. It does give them an advantage, though.
