In nature, aren't there usually more prey than hunters?
Long-term, so long as not _all_ prey are eaten, the population of both hunter and prey should balance each other. When the prey is scarce, the hunters starve.
Do you have a "fiercness" dimension on the tigers? Maybe they could learn to back off?

Adding more species, eg grass that the prey 'preys on', gives a more interesting picture...

Long term, that's my plan. I want to add bodies of water, larger maps (it's only 30x30 right now) and omnivores. First, though, I have to get it working :)
