I think to a certain degree people (well, some people) are finding a similar thing with friends. I've lived in the same town now for almost seven years, and I have a group of friends some of whom I've known for most of that.

We have a lot of shared stories, memories, experiences, etc., and I think that is similar to what you describe amongst your family.

I'm somewhat close with one of my cousins, but growing up (I'm 12 years older) I only saw him maybe 3-5 times a year and even less now that I live in the Midwest (and most of my relatives live in the Philadelphia area).
