#perl channels
channels plural? As in #perl on more than one IRC network?
I've only really experienced #perl on irc.perl.org and sadly it is much as you describe. Someone or something usually gets under my skin within 5 minutes and I leave again. I much prefer #london.pm on irc.perl.org, which tries to be very friendly* and I am told is actually one of the least intimidating places online for female users. perl, of course, is off topic [pm.org] :-)
* but perpetuated stupidity is not tolerated, but equally from regular
