The media, of course, want to make a big deal out of it because they don't have anything else to talk about right now, and they know that people will be interested if they make it sound like a plane full of people could have died over the Atlantic. In two minutes, they can convince you that you have enough information to have an opinion, and it will be just the opinion that they want you to have: the one that will keep you interested in the story but no wiser about how everyone failed to stop it.
