CROSS-PLATFORM

1. A way to look at a computer screen and recognize what you are seeing.

2. A way to move the mouse around, click things and maybe type.
Sounds like VNC to me. Admittedly I don't know much about it at the protocol level.

  Net::VNC [cpan.org] exists but looks like it does display only; it doesn't look like there's a way to send input back to the server.
  
  There's also something called LibVNCClient [sourceforge.net] that includes a perl-based macro recorder called VisualNaCro, which might be worth poking around with.
