  • Using pencils looks like a typical USA custom to me. Here in Belgium, and likely all over Europe, people generally don't ever use pencils to write anything. Pencils are for drawing. For writing, people tend to use a ballpoint pen, be it for scribbling on a scratchpad, for writing down anything for themselves, for keeps, or even to fill in official documents.

    If the result needs to look really neat, they'll use a real, fountain pen.
