Hell of an amen, brother.
I started going to the local Linux users group and as a result of that founded the first local Perl users group, both in hopes of finding people on my wavelength. Well, I found a few good people, but even in that group I’m still in the top tier (with the upper tiers all exclusively populated by the Perl group) and anyhow, not much getting in touch actually ensued.

I like Paul Graham too, but you have to make sure he's not just telling you what you want to believe.
