A more apt analogy would be, "He couldn't take his ball and go home, because other people would keep playing, so he is trying to pave over the playing field".
A while back, in response to one of the notes about Dave (either from Pudge or from /., I don't remember now), I sent the URL to Owen Thomas of Digerati. He gets a lot of mileage out of Dave for his, ahem, "service". Even Owen is starting to get bored with Dave, though, as he told me in a reply, "haven't we all had enough of Dave by now?" Of course, he ended up quoting Dave about a week or two later, because the guy is rapidly becoming the Dan Quayle of the technical web.
Personally, I have enough frustration from other sources, I don't even read Winer anymore. It's like flipping through the book "Slander" by Ann Coulter at a friend's house-- I already know, before I pick it up, that I'll be offended. So why pick it up? Anyway, I've accomplished my goal: my book on web services is now in the production phase, with no input or "advice" from Mr. Winer at any point in the writing process.

Oops, Owen Thomas' service is called "Ditherati", not "Digerati". It's slogan is, "See the digerati dither, daily". My bad.
