I wonder if the AS acquisiton by Sophos is gonna slow up the release? Maybe it is time to drag MingW out of the closet and compile it myself.

If you are talking about the ActivePerl release of Perl 5.8.1, then no, this will have no effect.

I already integrated all 5.8.1 changes into the ActivePerl tree. There is some more work to be done for the ActivePerl 807 build:

      • applying accumulated patches for the libwin32 modules
      • some installer and PPM changes/fixes
      • getting the ActiveState::Rx module in sync with 5.8.1

ActivePerl build 807 should be released in the second half of October (famous last words alert!).

All that being said, I still want to encourage you to compile it yourself and play with it. It is the first step down the road of finding and fixing bugs in Perl yourself. There can never be enough people with those skills. :)

      • Cool beans then.

It's somewhat dated, and it may not apply to compiling for Windows outside of Cygwin, but here's my perl build instructions [perl.org].
