First of all I agree that we need to think about the business needs, but I also don't think we can come to a good solution in this aspect with discussion only inside the hacker community - we need to engage the business world.
But while I agree we need to cater for business needs - I would not close any path at this starting stage - but rather think how to reconcile them with the business needs. I can see at least two strategies for that - one is a locked down system another is working with businesses on strategies for frequent updates (advising having a complete test suite, training stuff in upgrading etc).
