shoud we be worried that there are not many competent perl programmers for hiring? i am afraid that companies will be forced to look for replacements and this will turn into a bad circle.

as for fun part of the language, It's the main reason why i like perl. It's fun and much freedom to write prgram in perl even though english is not my 1st language. i would hate to see perl lose the fun.

i do understand the need for the changes
    • Australia. And maybe good for a while, until the company converts the entire department to Java because they can't find enough Perl people.

There is no reason Perl can't also be fun. If you personally want to write fun things, that is not a problem. But if coding for a company, one of the criteria is that things are more maintanable, more standard, and yes sometimes less fun.

The changes perhaps need to be something _added_ to the wider experience of the Perl/CPAN/etc rather than remove from just perl the language syntax.
