I did the same thing, and then when I wanted to run fink [sf.net], it was a bloody mess. I'm glad Randal [perl.org] was nice enough to tar up his /System/Library/Perl directory and pass it my way.
It's clear to me that the fink method of dumping everything in the /sw directory is the way to go so long as OS X keeps getting updated all the time.

  Shame fink doesn't come with it's own version of perl with everything linked against that, really. There are probably some good reasons for them not doing this, but I can't think of any right now. 8)
