For those who like me have been struggling to tackle the installation under adverse conditions, you can first wget -c http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wxwindows/wxWidgets-2.8.7.tar.gz [sourceforge.net] and put that file into the unpacked build directory of the Alien-wxWidgets distro. Then the installer won't try to download it from sourceforge.
Compilation of the Wx distro later, however, bombs out with the same error as in http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.cpan.testers/2008/08/msg2024182.html [perl.org], so I guess I give up for
