I may pay more with my auto insurance, but I have a real agent who helps me out and is well worth the cost. One time I completely forgot to pay my bill and he called to find out if anything was wrong. I was able to make a payment the day before my delinquency extension ran out. if you don't have an agent, that may be an option that can help in unique situations.
Another idea - can you set up automatic debits and get overdraft protection from your bank, assuming overdraft applies to automated payments.
Lastly, try and get the phone number of the people at the insurance company who can really help. I've been having problems with my mortgage company and finally got the number for the Quality Assurance people in the Executive Offices. They really get things done. Your ins company may have some similar folks.
