Conspiracy Theories

Today's Arizona Republic has an article about Sports Conspiracy Theories. A couple of the more 'entertaining' ideas:

Baltimore Orioles officials orchestrated a Camden Yards blackout to keep Cal Ripken Jr.'s playing streak alive after he was injured fighting actor Kevin Costner, who was sleeping with Ripken's wife.

And the classic:

New York mayor Rudy Giuliani sat with John McCain at Bank One Ballpark because they were working out a deal that would allow the D-Backs to win the Series in return for him selecting Rudy as his running mate in the 2004 presidential election...

  • While I don't believe the tall tales that you mentioned, I'm extremely jaded about college sports. College Basketball in particular is very suspect. Anyone remember Headake Smith? Or the kicker from Northwestern? And those were only the ones we *caught*.

    I'm also one of those loonies that thinks that certain professional athletes/teams (beyond the Black Sox, I mean) have been bought off, though nothing recently (they're too well paid now).
