The desktop support guys just gave me my new desktop (it's a Dell Optiplex). Wiped winblows immediately and I'm sitting here while linux installs. So I'm happy.
I bought a Precions 610 (a dual capable box running Xeons) for $245 (total with shipping, it's in my journal stuff I think) off an auction site. I was able to get a second P-II 400 for $30, a box specific heat sink for $15 (the heat sink that came with it would not fit), and an additional 512MB of ECC registered RAM for $100.
Of course, I would think that your Optiplex has something like a P4 1+ GHz in it, but a workstation class box (scsi hard drives and such) real
Unfortunately, around here we "get what we're given and like it" I'm afraid. No such luck with the P4 machine, it's a P3 733mhz box with 256MB of RAM. But compared with the one I gave up (P2 400mhz w/ 128MB of RAM) it's like night and day!
