Although Sikhs carrying the Kirpan are exempt from prosecution under the offensive weapons act

I didn't know about that one. I knew that a practising member of the Sikh faith is allowed to wear a turban instead of a helmet when riding a motorcycle. I wonder how many other such exemptions are carefully written into UK law. I need a list - Wikipedia you fail me! :-(

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/ukpga_19880033_en_14 [opsi.gov.uk] Section 139 gives exemption for religious reasons or part of any national costume. Thus the Scottish Sgian Dubh is exempted. I don't know whether or not this law has been superseded, but I think it still stands.
