extending the reach of the Internet

[ #20301 ]

We now have network all the way to the end of the garden. Previously the garden has been safely incommunicado because the wireless doesn't even reach to the back of the ground floor extension, let alone over the patio. Now using primitive 20th centuary technology (bloody long rj45 cable which I crimped with my own fair hands this very afternoon) I can lurk in the shady patch at the far end and write journal entries on use.perl. It's currently not very comfortable - I need to work on the seating arrangements, it seems.

  • WiFi is great, but at the end of the day, cable is cheap, reliable, faster and considerably more secure. Plus if you are doing anything for any extended period you'll need mains power anyway.

The only problem with cable is routing it round your house, it's expensive to do properly, and spouses don't seem to like CAT-5 trailing all over the place if you do it on the cheap! WiFi is good when you want an ad hoc solution, but it's somewhat over-hyped for most other uses.
