Only started with Perl4 and Perl5 in 1995. I was doing AWK etc for 12 years before that, and resisted switching. I've been doing OO since before C++ hit bigtime, with Objective-C and SmallTalk, so I really like the (no longer new) Perl5 OO style; and the Lispish Map style is also an old friend. What do I hack with Perl? All data that passes my way; systems monitoring scripts at $DayJob, weather data at night, and I cheat on NPR word puzzles. Member: [] [] /. LinkedIn []

N1VUX is my FCC-issued ham radio callsign.

Whimpers from the Sun?
«Solar physicists have observed the smallest ever coronal mass ejection (CME) – a type of explosion where plasma from the Sun is thrown out into space, sometimes striking the Earth and damaging orbiting satellites. The observation has come as a great surprise to scientists and has turned previous ideas up-side-down. »

Well, that explains why the Aurora was seen only very far north.

Oxygenated Levitation strongest yet
«Scientists at the University of Nottingham have successfully levitated diamond and some of the heaviest elements [u]sing liquid oxygen to increase the buoyancy created by a specially designed superconducting magnet. »

-   I haven't found a good reference for the magneto-Archimedes effect yet.
Gold was levitated this way 2 years ago; they've extended this well beyond what is required for any real material at standard pressures.

Hand gestures linked to better speaking
«Can't find the right word? You might want to start moving your hands. New research at the University of Alberta suggests that gesturing while you talk may improve your access to language. »

Darn, my sister was right.

Short Gama Ray Burst caught in the act - is it the formation of a new Black Hole?
«Astronomers may have for the first time witnessed the colossal crash of two neutron stars on the fringes of a distant galaxy. A NASA satellite detected a sharp flare of energy just moments after 12 midnight EDT on 9 May, triggering hours of intense research by telescopes on the ground. Analysis is ongoing, but a neutron-star merger--if confirmed--would help explain a type of explosion that has puzzled researchers for years »

XRay Telescope and UV Optical instruments may have caught same event. Some sources speculate it may be the creation of a black-hole (or merger of 2) .
