Fined for swearing in a conversation

[ #28767 ]
I could hardly believe my eyes when I read the Metro this morning.

They lead with the story of a teenager being given an £80 fine for saying "F... All, mate"( expletives censored ) as he was overheard by a police officer. Apparently the comment was made in a private conversation to a friend in response to being asked what he was up to.

Reading the article further it mentions that Kent police claim that swearing was a crime under the Public Order Act, and that a spokesman for them said "If Mr Walker is not happy, he can have his case decided by court".

According to the paper the £80 fines were introduced in 2003 as a part of Tony Blair's 'respect' campaign.
