Using M-x shell under Emacs always seemed like a cool idea, but also always turned out to be a little flaky when displaying the output properly.
M-x ansi-term feels much more solid.
C-c C-j, and C-c C-k takes care of going between char- and line-input modes.
This is now a very useful shell.
