L’âne appliance subscription (SaaS?)

One of my partner companies has launched a L’âne appliance subscription: It includes all hardware, software, and support for the duration of the service contract in one fixed monthly fee.

http://burrellbizsys.com/products/lane-subscription.html

I am not calling it software-as-a-service (SaaS): That title is trendy, and the L’âne subscription is about solving actual business problems, not pushing the-next-big-thing.

L’âne installation articles on the wiki

I've added articles to the wiki detailing a couple of L’âne installations: http://wiki.l-ane.net/wiki/Category:Installation.

Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to list some of the biggest L’âne installations, as I was only a third-party contractor for those companies' existing IT provider.

The best advertisement for any open source business software is seeing real, profit-generating businesses use it.

credit card processing

As it’s been a while since the last major public release of L’âne, I'm considering writing a few articles about changes which have already been tested and added to the trunk.

Today’s installment, credit card processing

http://burrellbizsys.com/ has paid for some work to integrate http://www.mercurypay.com/’s SOAP based credit card processing service into the system. We’ve passed the certification tests and are beta testing it in a live environment.

Rather than storing the added tendering data in parallel tables, I’ve added an extended field to the Sale->{'tenders'} elements; It allows an arbitrary number of key-value pairs to be tied more closely to the actual related tender.

repurposed journal

Since my work life is either directly or tangentally connected to perl (via L’âne), I've decided to use my use Perl journal as a work blog (I swear that's the only time I'll use the trendy B-word, excepting comedic effect).

I've been working as an independent consultant for more than a year now. Going independent seemed to encourage people who might compete against my former employer (Burrell Business Systems) to use my services. In fact, BBS is no longer my largest client.

excuses, excuses

Work has been busier in the last four weeks then I ever remember it, which is good and bad. It’s good because work leads to money and money pays my bills. Unfortunately, it means that less critical time-consumers, like L’âne, get pushed to the back-burner. On the L’âne-plus side, a larger portion of this work is L’âne related than ever, but it isn’t related to the next release.

Now the good news: I have my FreeBSD and Solaris test machines ready (well, nearly ready) to test releases. When I first started to test on FreeBSD, I uncovered some GNU-bias. With the addition of a Solaris machine, on a different architecture no less, I should uncover more biases.

dead drive dashed distribution date

A drive in my FreeBSD test machine died recently. While everything is backed up, I haven’t had time to install a new drive, let alone the OS. Therefore, my already planned L’âne release has been delayed until that machine is up again.

Besides FreeBSD/i386, I should soon have a Solaris/SPARC test machine. When these two new machines are up, all potential L’âne releases will have to pass on our three reference platforms: Fedora Core Linux 3/i386, FreeBSD 5.3/i386, and Solaris 10/SPARC.

Hopefully, these machines will all be up by mid-week, so I can get the next release out by this weekend (2005-02-20).

back in the swing o' things

While it's been quite a while since I wrote any L’âne-related journal entries, I have been working on it. I swear. ;-)

L’âne now has its own domain: http://l-ane.net/. I've moved the task tracker (my Bugzilla) to http://tasks.l-ane.net/ (it was sitting somewhere about here http://ryotous.com/bugs/-ish. Assuming my Apache admin skills are working today, that ryotous link should redirect ya' to the l-ane.net site.

While this statement will probably jinx me, I plan on releasing the next version of L’âne in the next few days. See the 2004-04-01++ release task: http://tasks.l-ane.net/show_bug.cgi?id=12.

Finally, a quick personal note. I've had quite a bit of personal and work related upheaval in the past year and a half, but I think most things have stablized again. Unfortunately, new L’âne work was delayed because of these changes.

time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future

I've been bogged down recently and haven't been able to finish the last two tasks for the 2004-03-12++ L'ane release. I may move that release to 2004-03-12+=2 and create a separate release with the various bug fixes and cleanups that have made it into CVS after 2004-03-12 but aren't part of the next release task (bug 12).
