First mention of an "Application Server"...

[ #8366 ]

...in the context of a web application server that I can find is this.

The sad thing is that it came for an aol user :-)

The idea had been around for a while of course, but more in hardware (as in serving an application from a box) instead of software (as in serving an application from inside a piece of software called an application server).

  • The term "application server" predates the web, though I didn't hear the "thin" vs. "fat" client distinction before there were browsers.
    • Sure, of course it does. I was trying to find out when people started talking about them in conjunction with the web, and that seems to be the earliest mention. I'm fairly sure there were thin vs. fat client discussions earlier than the web however. Although it's an interesting point, and I think I'll make googling for that one of todays tasks :-)
