Sometimes when I need to be productive I shut off IRC, email, or both. Of course, that doesn't prevent me from wasting time, but it removes the more immediate and pervasive time-wasters.
At this new place [citysearch.com] where I am hanging out, I am using Pine with the IMAP server thing. Helps productivity quite a bit. How so? Because it's more hassle to start pine (I have to type the imap password) so I don't do it every time I get distracted.
