Exactly the same thing happened to me last night. Including the external monitor the laptop was attached to. I just fumbled for the suspend key on my laptop and it was all fine.
Unfortunately, my server didn't turn out so well. It's dead, dead, dead. I think the power supply has blown a fuse thanks to the genius of the electricity company in managing to make the power flicker on and off repeatedly for minutes before finally giving out. Still, there's no smoke.

I'm more seriously considering getting one now that I've been burned however. Previously, the power in this area has been very, very reliable.
