Limping into the future
I've been pondering the least expensive way to replace my home Samba/CVS/etc. server, which is running on a P133 with a failing disk controller. The refurbed boxes I've looked at don't instill great confidence, and new Intel and AMD stuff seems overpriced (and overkill). A friend pointed me at the VIA mini-itx board, which has video, LAN, and sound on-board, and uses the low-power C3 chip. Seems fine for a headless server. You can get them in small cases
, and some folks have built their own, more personalized
, enclosures. I do so like the idea of something small and quiet.
